Laura and Oak Alley

Our most popular plantation combination tour.( scroll down to see full Oak Alley description.)

Located on the Mississippi River between the historic cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Oak Alley Plantation has been called the "Grande Dame" of the Great River Road. Nowhere else in the South will you find such a spectacular setting! The quarter-mile canopy of giant live oak trees, believed to be nearly 300 years old, forms an impressive avenue leading to the classic Greek-revival style antebellum home.

Have your passport ready to enter the Creole world of Louisiana at Laura Plantation, an historic sugar plantation built in 1805. The one hour tour is based upon 5,000 pages of French documents and upon Laura's "Memories of the Old Plantation Home ", dramatically detailing 250 years of true-life stories of Creole women, slaves and children.

Laura is surrounded by fields of sugarcane and boasts 11 historic buildings on the National Register, including slave cabins where the West-African folktales of Compair Lapin (later known as Br'er Rabbit) were recorded over 125 years ago.

Laura is an example of raised architecture, see picture below.

The mansion on the plantation was built between 1837and 1839 for  a French Creole  sugar planter Jacques Telesphore Roman. Jacques Telesphore Roman's father-in-law, Joseph Pilie, was an architect and is considered the likely designer. The trees predate the house by some 100 years, no one knows who planted them.

San Francisco and Oak Alley

Enjoy two of the most beautiful plantations in this popular combination tour. See Oak Alley description above.

On the banks of the Mississippi River, less than 40 minutes from New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Hammond, and Houma, stands one of the most remarkable examples of mid-Nineteenth Century architecture in the state of Louisiana – San Francisco Plantation House. Built in 1856 by Edmond Bozonier Marmillion, the house was originally named St. Frusquin, a name derived from the French slang term, sans Fruscins, meaning "without a penny in my pocket", a reference to its high cost.

In 1870 Achille D. Bougere purchased the plantation and gave it the name of San Francisco.
A 2 million-dollar restoration was completed in 1977. During the restoration the house was painstakingly restored to its original splendor, making it the only authentically restored plantation house in Louisiana. San Francisco is known for the intricate and beautiful decorative painting of its interior rooms, by Italian artisans.

Destrehan Plantation

On the banks of the Great Mississippi River, only minutes upstream from historic New Orleans, Louisiana, stands beautiful Destrehan Plantation.

In 1787, Robin deLogny entered into a contract with Charles, a free mulatto, to build a French Colonial style plantation house. It took three years to build the house, everything being hewn and sanded by hand.

Established in 1787, Destrehan is the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley, and has survived colonial and civil wars, not to mention the perils of time.

Houmas House

.

Houmas Plantation was a tract of land along the Mississippi River purchased from the Houmas Indians in colonial times by Maurice Conway and Alexandre Latil. It was Latil who built the rear house in the late 1700s, with characteristics of both Spanish and rural French architecture. The magnificent Greek Revival Mansion was built in 1840 by John Smith Preston and his wife, Caroline. Her father, Revolutionary war hero General Wade Hampton of South Carolina, had bought theproperty in 1812.

Today, through the work of owner Kevin Kelly, Houmas House has reclaimed its position as  crown jewel of Lousiana's River Road, and features 12 acres of gardens.

Houmas house tours are a little more expensive due to the extensive and lavish interior restoration, plus the gardens.
